Last week, I shared with a group of student-athletes leaders on the topic of focus. When I asked them to share what hurts their focus, one of them shared "distractions keep me from persevering towards what I know I'm supposed to be doing."

Can you relate?

You know you should persevere towards a task, assignment, or project - or even greater purposes like becoming a great lover, becoming whole, or becoming your true self - but distractions get in the way of your focus.

Here's the good news: You are more than a conqueror through Jesus who loves you. Anything that is trying to overcome you, including distractions, ultimately cannot withstand the love of Jesus for you. And that makes you an overcomer.

So, how do you fix your focus, so you can persevere through distractions?

Here's a simple tool:

  1. Set up a timer on your phone for 60 seconds
  2. Imagine you're watching a basketball game
  3. Look at the 24-second shot clock counting down the seconds for the players to take the shot. 24-23-22-21 etc.
  4. Start the timer and close your eyes.
  5. Keep focusing on the shot clock in your mind with your eyes closed
  6. Count down from 24 to 0
  7. Every time you get distracted, start over from 24 again

Were you able to count down to 0? How many times did it take you?

THIS WEEK: Whenever you get distracted from persevering, fix your focus with the 24-second shot clock visualization.

PRAY: God of Perseverance, I know that distractions will come from many sides. I also know that you gave me the ability to fix my focus. You call me more than a conqueror, so I know I can defeat any distraction that is trying to defeat me. Help me to activate my faith in who you created me to be. Let it be so. Amen.
